Temagami: A Brief History
(Source: Wikipedia)

The Anishnabai have been living in the area for at least 6,000 years after migrating from the east coast of North America. The land was divided into familial hunting and trapping territories.

Since the main east-west fur trade route bypassed Temagami to the south, settlement of this area by Europeans did not come until 1834. That year the Hudson's Bay Company built a store on Temagami Island, which later relocated to Bear Island. The town itself was founded by Dan O'Connor, who in 1903 formed the O'Connor Steamboat and Hotel Company on the lake and established its first store on the future townsite. By 1906, he had built three hotels on Lake Temagami: Hotel Ronnoco, Temagami Inn, and Lady Evelyn Hotel and by 1910 the company operated ten steamships on the lake including the Belle of Temagami.

The Forest Reserves Act of 1898 established the 15,000 km2 (5,800 sq mi) Temagami Forest Reserve. Because of this reserve, the region was home to the 'last Old-growth forests in Ontario'. Logging of the vast pine stands only began in the 1920s. Now just a few patches of old growth remain, including the White Bear Forest and 'the world's largest stand of old-growth red and white pine forest' - the Obabika Old-Growth Forest.

The inspiration and wonder of the area were brought to millions around the world in 1907 when Grey Owl arrived in Temagami. He was employed by Keewaydin Canoe Camp as a guide, and later by the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests as a ranger. His subsequent books and extensive lecturing in Britain and the United States brought tremendous attention to northeastern Ontario and wildlife conservation.

To the SOUTH ISLAND ...

FERRY CROSSING
Wellington, NORTH ISLAND to Picton, SOUTH ISLAND

We sailed on the Kaitaki Interislander, the largest ferry in NZ's fleet. Kaitaki is a Māori word meaning ' challenger '. About a 3.5 hour crossing, out of Fitzroy Bay on the North Island and across Cook Strait to Picton on the South Island. From there we travelled westerly for about 3 hours along winding coastal roads to Stoke, a suburb of Nelson.

First impressions of this coastline ... spectacular scenery!

KAYAKING: Rivers, A Creek and Mangroves, Florida

CURRENT LOCATION: Rock Creek RV Resort, Naples, FL, USA

If you're a kayaker, you won't be disappointed by what the Naples area has to offer for day-trip paddling opportunities.

Blackwater River, Collier-Seminole State Park
There’s an informal paddling group here at Rock Creek and we’ve connected with them for this daytrip. We did about 12 kilometres on the Blackwater River today ... left Naples around 10 am and returned by 3:30 pm ... maybe 3.5 hours on the water. There is a longer loop possible here but we didn’t paddle it due to the tidal effect.  We got as far as the Old Grove location just west of Mud Bay. I had read reviews of this trip that described an abundance of wildlife, but we did not encounter it. If anything, we saw very little ... a couple of Osprey, some Anhinga, a couple of dozen flying Mullet, 2 Wood Storks and a half dozen or so other waterfowl. Regardless, it was a nice paddle ... they always are!

KAYAKING: GATOR Hunting on the Myakka River, Florida

... with a CAMERA

We had two good days paddling on the Myakka River. From our site , a short paddle intersects us with the river proper, where we can travel north or south - and we did just that. It’s a pretty river and fairly quiet. The palms and riverbank vegetation are thick along the shoreline and there are few takeouts, landings are very muddy. Most river traffic are kayakers and some fishing boats. Not an abundance of waterfowl, but enough to keep us interested. We saw several of the Herons - Blue and Little Blue and Green, Egrets, also Wood Storks and Belted Kingfishers, Osprey and a couple of Hawks we couldn’t identify. Sunday was cooler and we didn’t see any gators but Monday made up for it ... a dozen at least, one that was around 10 feet, a few 8 and 4 footers and one or two small ones. Alligators are only agressive when they are protecting their young or during the breeding season. Like any wild creature if you give them space they won’t bother you. We stayed in the middle of the river channel as much as possible and shot any pictures from a comfortable distance for both us and the gators.

Dave's World

Dave swears he saw one, two, three ... at least a dozen caymen. Well OK!, maybe just their eyes, so that's six. But they were big ... the eyes were BIG and they looked right at me!

We Enjoyed the People the Most

Accommodation: Starz Azzurro Resort, Cabarete, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
Currency: The official currency is the Dominican Republic peso. A small commission may be charged for exchanging CDN $. US dollars are accepted in some businesses.

The Dominican people are wonderful. They are sincerely friendly, happy and pleasant, but very poor. The only Caribbean country poorer is Haita. Our visit was focussed primarily around the resort and adjacent town area. We travelled the highway from Puerto Plata but never visited the city. The only part of the countryside we visited was during the bike tour. Subsistence farming is common and the people live at a very low standard. They do what they can to make any money at all and that includes trying to sell just about anything, however we didn't witness any begging. The tourist industry has caused much of the economic growth and a move to the coastal areas. Families have relocated from the farming and mountainous regions to find higher paying jobs.

Royal Decameron and Gamboa Rainforest Resorts, PANAMA

Mucho, Mucho Sol ... Mucho, Mucho Calor

We only saw a small part of this country in the two weeks we were here. Even though we were in three Provinces, we barely entered Cocle and Colon. The heat and humidity at the time of year we were here is very oppressive. Sizzling hot, temperatures ranged between the low 30's to low 40's C and the humidity was typically between 80 and 90%.

Duration: 13 days on the water
Description: The section we paddled is said by many kayakers to be the best on Lake Superior, if not all of the Great Lakes. 175 kms of road-less wilderness, clear turquoise waters, wonderful sand beaches and several white-water rivers with spectacular waterfalls.

From Superior - Journeys On An Inland Sea, by Gary and Joanie McGuffin
"Superior is the most expansive lake on Earth. Its' area of 32,000 square miles (82,000 square kilometres) would cover the province of New Brunswick with room to spare, or the states of Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Massachusetts combined. A rock dropped into the water over the lakes' deepest spot would sink 1,330 feet (450 m) before coming to rest on the bottom. Superiors' enormous size can also be described by its volume of water: 3,000 cubic miles (6,500 cubic kms), enough to cover the North and South American continents a food deep. A drop of water entering Superior from rain clouds or rivers can circulate the basin for 200 years before it flows down the St. Mary's River at Sault Ste. Marie. More than 200 rivers flow into it, but the St. Mary's is the only one flowing out. The coastline is nearly 2,000 kilometres long and if you add to that, the shoreline around all its' islands, the total distance is closer to 3,000 kilometres. It creates its' own weather patterns, establishing rules about the ebb and flow of seasonal life. Its' sheer size deters crossing by hawks, eagles, ospreys and falcons, who prefer to fly the eastern and western shores during fall migrations."
